AN elderly couple were thrown to the ground and robbed by a youth -- for their groceries.
The pensioners, who are both aged 83, were attacked in Manchester Old Road, Bury, as they walked home from the shops.
A teenager, aged about 15, crept up behind them and pushed the woman to the ground as he grabbed her shopping bag.
The couple, who have not been named, both fell to the ground and the boy ran off with the bag, which contained just two loaves of bread and other groceries.
The elderly man suffered facial injuries and damaged his knee, which he had recently had replaced. His wife hurt her shoulder.
They were taken to Fairfield General Hospital for treatment but have since been released.
A police spokesman said: "This incident was extremely distressing for the couple who were robbed in broad daylight for the sake of a few groceries.
"We must catch the person responsible for this and I would urge anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area to contact us as soon as possible."
The offender is believed to be white, aged 15-16 years, and of medium build. He was wearing a light green jacket or top.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which occurred about 2.45pm on Monday.
Anyone with information is asked to call 0161 856 8216 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
