Waterloo 13 Leigh 1st XV 17: LEIGH RU progressed to the next round of the Lancashire Cup with a well earned victory over National League Division Two opponents at Blundellsands.

A confident Waterloo pack exerted early pressure and won a lineout near the visitors line. A clean catch and well-rehearsed drive produced a forward's try in the corner for an early 5-0 lead.

Leigh responded when, from a quickly taken free-kick, the ball was moved wide. The chance seemed lost when Bentham switched direction but a deft chip ahead caught the home defence flat footed and he followed up to touch down for an equalising score.

Leigh were subjected to a period of strong forward pressure and defended stoutly before conceding a second try on the stroke of half-time.

A similar pattern of play resumed in the second half, with the Leigh defence withstanding all that their opponents could throw at them, despite an incredible penalty count. Waterloo increased their lead with a converted penalty before Leigh replied with a good lineout catch and drive to the line, where Sutton stretched through a maul to claim a touchdown which was converted by Fisher to reduce the margin to 13-12.

Leigh had last laugh when Fisher split the home defence in midfield and the ball was moved wide for Bentham to finish with a score in the corner.

Leigh had to withstand an almighty assault for the last 10 minutes.

Tyldesley U9s 20 Leigh U9s 30

Leigh held on for this win against a very spirited Tyldesley side. With Leigh going in at half time 20 points up, the game looked over, but Tyldesley's loan players from Leigh had other ideas, with all the Tyldesley points coming from them. Marcus Williams 3 and Charlotte Ranson scored for Tyldesley while Jacob Browning's tackling stopped virtually all of Leigh's moves.

Tries for Leigh came from Thomas Lloyd (5) and Richard Thorpe. Man of the Match was Thomas Lloyd and Top Tackler was Marcus Williams.
