WHAT is it about Conservatives that they refuse to recognise the truth but rely instead on Central Office propaganda?

However, I will try yet again to explain to "Radcliffe Resident", obviously someone with something to hide, why Labour-controlled Bury is not a high taxing council. These figures are not of my making or imagination; they are official ones supplied by independent accountants.

The national average council tax per household is as follows: Conservative councils £833; Liberal councils £824; Labour councils £738. The figure for Bury is £737. I would also point out that an immediate rise of 10 per cent would still leave Bury short of Liberal Democrats or Tories this year. So even next year; whatever the rise in Bury, our council tax base will be well below the average.

As to Liverpool Council under the Liberal Democrats, do we really want to follow them? They have slashed £16 million from their social services budget, privatised many services, made staff redundant, spent all the council's financial reserves and have delayed essential capital schemes for schools. This is a policy of "panic now, pay later".

COUNCILLOR JOHN BYRNE,

leader of the council.
