Virtual snow's like real thing

ONE of Rossendale's most popular long-standing tourist attractions is to be given a new lease of life -- a virtual snow surface.

Ski Rossendale, Haslingden Old Road, Rawtenstall, is to replace the old Denix matting on the intermediate slope with a new, smoother and safer surface called Snowflex.

The surface is marketed as the nearest substitute to mountain snow.

Michael Hunt, of Ski Rossendale, said: "The new slope will have major benefits for all people of all abilities.

"More advanced enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that the new intermediate slope will be re-shaped to provide a more comfortable jump landing, and will also have a counterslope at the bottom for easier and safer stopping. And for beginners the good news is that the new softer, smoother covering will significantly reduce the number of injuries from falls."

It will be unveiled this week by Burnley's Commonwealth gymnast Craig Heap and Rossendale's Mayor Councillor James Eaton.

The event on Thursday will also feature a showcase of local snowboarding talent.

Michael said: "During the day we're going to be treated to a gravity defying snowboarding display on the new slope which I am told has to be seen to be believed.

"Later in the evening we are holding a more informal event with a barbecue, live DJ and more snowboarding thrills and spills. At the end of the night we're opening the slope to people who can ski or snowboard to a reasonable standard so they can experience the fabulous new surface first hand."
