REGARDING donkey stones (LET, February 12), my late husband spent many years researching his family tree, and found a family grave at Tockholes.

It was very old and neglected, so we decided to spruce it up. We planted many spring bulbs and also arrived with water, scrubbing brushes and I brought a few cream-coloured donkey stones.

The end result was fantastic. The large headstone and the surrounding stonework I donkey-stoned looked brand-new, as though it had just been erected.

Later, our American cousins, whose ancestors came from Blackburn, came to visit and when they saw the family grave they were so pleased that when they went back to America, they took back with them -- yes, some donkey stones.
