THE borough's army of Commonwealth Games volunteers are to be rewarded for their efforts.

They are invited to a buffet reception at Bury Town Hall on March 13, where they can find out how to volunteer in other ways.

Councillor Gill Campbell, executive member for community services, said: "We are proud that a group of committed individuals from the borough played a significant part in this major sporting occasion. There is no doubt that without their support, the event would never have been the huge success that it was.

"However, it is not just in sport where volunteers have a part to play. Without people prepared to help others, for little or no reward, much would not get done. We value the role that volunteers play and that is why we wanted to hold this celebratory occasion. Also, we hope that it will highlight the part that volunteers play in the community and encourage more to get involved."

Volunteers who have not yet received their invitation should contact Joan Boardman on 253 5396 or email A.Frost@bury.gov.uk

The party will also launch the council's Events Guidance Document, which aims to help groups to organise community events. It gives advice and details of rules and regulations, such as health and safety issues, which need to be considered. It will be on the council's website, www.bury.gov.uk
