Clarets legend Leighton James returned to Turf Moor at the weekend for the first time in seven years and was delighted to see them beat another of his former teams, Derby County.
Now he believes they have got what it takes to spring an FA Cup shock when Fulham visit the Clarets in a fifth round replay.
"I would give them a chance, why not," he said although he is warning fans not to get carried away.
"I actually think that the easy part has been done, bringing them back up to Turf. They were not predicted to get a result down there but having done that the situation has changed.
"They are still taking on a Premiership side but, knowing the Burnley fans like I do, the expectation level will be high.
"In addition the reward for both teams is a big one. They have avoided Arsenal, Chelsea and Leeds in the next round and, no disrespect to Watford, they will fancy their chances of making the semi-finals."
James will be watching the game on television and he believes the Clarets will have to hit the heights they reached against Spurs if they are to make it into the last eight for the first time in 20 years.
"They played really, really well that night and it shows what they can achieve," he said.
"The Cup run is a big boost for Burnley at a time like this and the financial side is important."
James was an ever present in the Burnley side the last time they made it to the semi-finals of the FA Cup, losing to Newcastle United at Hillsborough in 1974. Now he is hoping that the current Clarets can go at least one better.
