IT is not true to say that the Cathedral is opposed to the restoration of the Waterloo Pavilions in Blackburn (LET, February 21). Indeed the opposite is true and has always been so.
The Cathedral has consistently supported the council in its efforts to pedestrianise Church Street and take the lead -- on behalf of the council -- in developing an excellent plan to restore the Pavilions.
Indeed, the Cathedral has expended £86,000 of its own finance and resources to rejuvenate the Pavilions.
Our letter to the planning committee held on February 20 was fully supportive of the proposals.
What your reporter has exploited -- and the headlines distorted -- is our observation that the original scheme for the Pavilions was, in our opinion, superior to the current proposals and in accord with the local plan as being best for the town and the Cathedral. It is mischievous to interpret this as opposition.
We are delighted that something is to be done to the buildings at last. We shall continue to support the council in all appropriate developments which enhance the town centre for the benefit of all its residents and visitors.
CHRISTOPHER ARMSTRONG, Dean of Blackburn.
