MORE volunteers are needed to help raise £50,000 for a home for the handicapped.

Rough Lee Home for the Physically Handicapped launched its funding drive last month in a bid to raise the cash for a new learning centre for young adults.

It enlisted the help of Coronation Street star Julie Hesmondhalgh, who plays Hayley Cropper, to act as patron. The home is on the grounds of the former Rough Lee maternity unit, Accrington, where she was born.

The new centre will include a sensory experience room, computer suite and gym equipment.

Manager Sheila Baines said: "Our own carers help with in-house fundraising but we want people with a bit more time on their hands outside employment."

The initiative is being overseen by fundraising co-ordinator Mary Baines.

"I would rather target people with specific skills," said Sheila. "People need to come to have a look at the ideas we have come up. We have a plethora of ideas and we want people to be pro-active in helping Mary bring them to fruition."

The cash drive will get into gear at Easter with a visit from Julie, originally from Church, and the aim is to have a core of five to 10 volunteers should be in place before then.
