AN inaugural sports dinner raised more than £4,000 for the up and coming Darwen Ladies Football Club.

England 1966 World Cup legend Alan Ball entertained the audience with a talk dating back to his debut for Blackpool in 1962. The night at Darwen Golf Club also featured a comedian, and a three-course dinner for club sponsors.

Raffle prizes ranged from bottles of wine to televisions and deep fat fryers. An auction saw a 1966 replica shirt, signed by Alan Ball, sold for £200, while a signed Rovers ball went for £110 and a signed 2002/03 shirt reached £170. A Chelsea shirt, signed by their former striker Gianlucca Vialli, raised £50 and a signed Clarets shirt reached the top bid of £95.

Club chairman Nigel Ramsden said: "It was a fantastic night. We hope this will pave the way for the ladies team and that a lot more success is to come. As well as climbing up the league tables, we also want to get the community more involved in the club."
