IF I understood Councillor K Connor (Letters, February 15) correctly, he equates the function of council scrutiny committees to that of the House of Lords. Therefore, they have the right to veto any decisions of the executive. So why are his fellow councillors always complaining about their lack of power in the decision-making process?
The principle purpose of a councillor is to put forward the views of his constituents on issues affecting them and, if objections are strong enough, to try to overturn the decisions at a full council meeting.
If as they say they cannot do this, then councillors have no useful function and one representative is as good as three.
