A CHARITY struggling to stay afloat is to benefit from a music extravaganza featuring live bands.
Maundy Relief, which helps the homeless, will receive the proceeds from a four-band gig at Oswaldtwistle Civic Theatre.
The cash will throw a lifeline to the charity, which survives on donations from the public.
In November, manager Dorothy McGregor warned the operation would only last another six months without large-scale funding.
The centre, in Abbey Street, Accrington, was established three years ago and counsels people with problems including alcoholism, depression, homelessness and poverty.
Operating seven days a week, staff and volunteers also distribute 145 food parcels weekly.
A personal appearance by the charity's patron, Coronation Street actress Julie Hesmondhalgh, alias Hayley Cropper, attracted scores of people in November and helped raise the organisation's profile.
The gig is the first venture for music promotions company Coolly Tainted Promotions, run by Paul Bertwistle and John Burke, landlord of the Albion pub in Clayton-le-Moors, who say they are hoping to fill the 472-seat theatre.
"The money is running out so they need as much as possible," said Mr Bertwistle. "The bands are playing free and all profits are going to the charity.
"When was the last time you heard of a charity gig round here? There's not enough of it done any more. A lot of charities like this will die out if they are not being funded."
So far two bands have confirmed they will be playing -- Soul Science, and Maupa -- but the final bill will feature four.
Mrs McGregor said: "We are absolutely overwhelmed. Mr Burke has been to see us, and that kind of support and interest really helps in terms of morale, enthusiasm and especially funding.
"The situation at the moment is wWe are living from three months to three months but things are much improved thanks to the enormous support of local people."
Mr Bertwistle said there would be more music events if it is a success.
"If this goes well and if people will pay to see the bands for a charity gig, they might come and see them again.
"All we are trying to do is get decent bands playing around Hyndburn. Anyone who wants to see bands has to go to Blackburn or Burnley for a live music venue. There are no bands of the calibre we want to play in the area.
"Everyone loves live music. We are not scared of diversifying, from heavy rock to country or hip hop. If there's a crowd there we will get the music for them."
Any bands wanting to take part should contact John Burke on 01254 238585, or send a demo to the Albion, Whalley Road, Clayton-le-Moors.
The gig takes place on Friday, April 24, and tickets are £5, available from the theatre, Accrington Town Hall or the Albion.
