BLACKBURN Hawks finished their league and cup programme with a 10-goal thriller and honours shared with old rivals Kingston Jets.

The Hawks travelled to Hull with five under 19s in the line-up and more than matched the experienced Jets as they forced the pace in a pulsating match that ended five apiece.

Hero for the Hawks was David Sheffield with four goals, a personal tally which kept them in front for much of the game.

Player-coach Bobby Haig was delighted, saying: "I really enjoyed this one, the young lads were up for it and showed how much they want to play for this club.

"The likes of Adam Leaver, Peter Tapp, Adam Fuller and Scott Barnett were outstanding. I am looking forward to them moving up full-time next season.

"I didn't even put my kit on for this game. I coached throughout and let them get on with it."

Skipper Gordon Whyte hit the Hawks into the lead on five minutes, before the Jets roared back with two strikes.

Sheffield then took centre stage, blasting a hat-trick to give the Hawks the initiative. As the action swung from end to end, the Jets clawed their way back to set the stage for a thrilling finale with the score at 4-4 going into the final period.

Inevitably, Sheffield spearheaded the Hawks' assault on Karl Holmes' goal, grabbing his fourth to clinch the lead. For the hosts, Dave Phillips scored his second to tie the scores in a hard-fought contest.

Haig said: "Unbelievably, they gave the man-of-the-match to Gordon Whyte, but straight away he handed over to David Sheffield. He had a great game, but then they all did!"

The Hawks play host to the stars of Scottish club Paisley in a challenge match at the Arena on Saturday, face-off 6 pm.
