POLICE were questioning a man today after a 30-year-old was found hanging from a basketball post in a park.
Andrew Forrest's body was discovered when police and ambulance crews were called to Walverden Park, Brunswick Street, Nelson, at 2am today.
Police were alerted by an anonymous male 999 caller and are treating the death as suspicious. Paramedics said Mr Forrest was already dead when they arrived.
A 23-year-old Nelson has been arrested in connection with the inquiry and was due to be interviewed by detectives today.
Detective Inspector Dermot Horrigan, who is leading the investigation, said: "We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 30-year-old man in Nelson."
A spokesman for Pennine Police added: "A man was found hanging from a nylon rope attached to a basketball goal post in the basketball court of Walverden Park at 2am today.
"A 23-year-old Nelson man has been arrested and is currently in custody. He is due to interviewed later today. We are treating this death as suspicious."
The park is divided into two sections, including a woodland area next to the basketball court and children's play area.
Walverden Park is popular with dog walkers and bounded by terrace houses in nearby Day Street, Fern Bank and Park Drive. Residents said they were unaware of the incident.
