TWO women tricksters talked their way into the home of a 90 year-old woman and stole cash, bank cards and pension book.

Now police are urging people to check unknown callers' credentials and are anxious for information about the pair seen leaving the victim's Green Street home in Hindsford around 4pm last Friday in a distincitive white and blue van.

Posing as charity workers they asked the woman if she had any old clothes or items they could pass on to the elderly and needy.

When the victim suggested they return after she had gathered some items together, one of the women then asked if she could enter her home to use the toilet.

As she distracted the occupant, the other woman forced her way inside and ushered the old lady into the living room. Both thieves entered the room and grabbed the victim's bag then hurryed out, slamming the door behind them. The bag contained the cash, cards and a pension book.

Both conwomen are described as white and aged between 40 and 60 years. One was 5ft 6ins tall, of medium build, with short blonde hair and she spoke with a local accent. The other was 5ft tall and also spoke with a local accent.

Detective Constable Paolo Dale of Leigh CID said: "This was a terrifying experience for the victim. These women posed as charity workers and took advantage of her good nature. To know that such despicable people have tricked their way into her home has left her extremely shaken.

"I cannot emphasise enough the importance of asking for identification from people who call at your house and do not be afraid to turn them away if you are not happy with their credentials.

"I would like to take this opportunity to warn other elderly or vulnerable people in the area to be on their guard.

"If anyone has seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area, or have seen a vehicle matching this description or has any information at all which may help us to track down these people I would urge them to contact police immediately on 0161 856 7254 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
