GARY Morley, the athlete injured after being knocked down during last week's Great North Half Marathon has been released from hospital to continue his recovery from head injuries at home.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the incident has not been apprehended. Witnesses can call the Chorley Road Policing Unit on 01257-246376.

Smithson stars

CAROLINE Smithson was the Under 15 Girls' Athlete of the Match at the final Sports Hall Athletics match at Blackpool, completing a clean sweep for Hyndburn AC after Heather Donald and Anna Griffiths had won the title at the previous meets.

Smithson won the two lap and four lap races and added second places in the speed bounce and the vertical jump.

The Hyndburn Under 15 Girls won the series while the club's Under 13 Boys tied for the title with Holy Cross, Chorley.

Over all the age groups Hyndburn classified third.

Linda's milestone

LINDA Clarkson became the first woman from Darwen Dashers to run a sub 40 minute 10K on Sunday when she clocked 39:25 at the Trafford 10K.

Against some top drawer opponents Linda finished sixth woman, while Derek Lee and Nigel Barnes were the leading Dashers men in 38:00 and 38:03 respectively as 18 club members completed the club's latest Championship event.

Blackburn Harrier Evan Cook was first Over 50 in 34:44, while 47-year-old Chorley Harrier John Chaplin was second M45 in 34:00.

Duo lead the way

MARTIN Bland and Julia Hartley were the leading Accrington Road Runners at the Haweswater Half Marathon.

The enterprising club ran a coach to Sunday's race as 18 members took part. Bland returned 1:27:24 but over 50 veteran Jimmy Smithson was not far behind in 1:29:51.

John Hayworth, Peter Myerscough and David Ratcliffe all cracked 1:35. Julia was the first East Lancashire woman in 1:40:43 from Over 35s Yvonne Wickham of Clayton and Sandra Snape of Blackburn Road Runners.

First local man was Chorley Harrier Steve Holden, 22nd of nearly 350 finishers in 1:24:01.
