EAST Lancashire MPs have urged firefighters and their management to work out a settlement based on the latest 16 per cent offer.
The extra cash -- in return for modernisation based on the controversial Bain Report -- would be in pay packets by next July.
But the Fire Brigades Union Executive is urging members to reject the plan, saying it is worse than an offer briefly tabled in November last year which would have given its members within a year. But local MPs believe a deal is now within sight and have urged the two sides to get back to the negotiating table.
Burnley MP Mr Pike said: "I have always said that something around 16 per cent would be the basis for a settlement. I would now hope the two sides can get back to talking and resolve the outstanding issues.
"Maybe the meeting with John Prescott can deal with these matters and move things forward. I understand the FBU have some concerns but I think we have the basis of deal. I hope we can have a settlement without further strikes.''
Hyndburn MP Greg Pope said: "We are talking about 16 per cent over 18 months when the rate of inflation is two per cent - and that is a pretty good offer.
"I do think this is a basis for a deal. I know there are some matters the union is concerned but but surely they can resolve these round the negotiating table.
"We need to try and get a settlement, and I think one is in sight, without any more strike action. I think that is what the public and the local firefighters want.''
Ribble Valley Tory MP Nigel Evans said: "I am extremely disappointed with the FBU reaction. I think that this a good basis for proper negotiations. I think we can get a deal based on this."
"At a time like this our troops should be preparing for war in the Gulf not fighting fires.''
