FIRE BOSSES today warned youngsters who start fires in derelict buildings they are putting their own lives at risk and also those of innocent people.
The stark warning came after a gang of youths set fire to allotments in Gannow Lane, Burnley, on Saturday afternoon at 1.30pm.
Butane gas cylinders were discovered in the Gannow Lane allotments, which firefighters said could have caused an explosion, sparking a mass evacuation of nearby residents.
Fire crews were called out again that night to some garages at the rear of Gannow Lane at 8pm.
Sub-officer Neil Ashworth said there were hidden dangers lurking in derelict buildings which could cost lives. He added: "It seems this area is a target for people starting fires in the buildings.
"This incident could have been a lot worse.
"The perpetrators may not realise the harm they could have caused but it could have been potentially devastating and in the worst case cost lives.
"We are putting ourselves at danger because if we do not know what is inside a building and then a cylinder goes off then we are at risk as well."
Firefighters said the first building was completely destroyed by the blaze.
SO Ashworth added: "A team will now be called in to make the area safe.
"We have secured the area as best we can which will hopefully stop any more incidents from taking place."
