Old Alts...0 , Unsworth...6: IT was only a matter of time before Unsworth rattled up a high-scoring win.

On a wet and windy day at Crossford Bridge, Sale last Saturday, they disposed of basement club Old Alts in a comfortable manner.

Despite their lowly position, clubs like Old Alts have given Unsworth difficult games, but this time there was no repeat of earlier matches as they set about getting an early foothold on the game.

It was obvious that the home side were going to struggle against the visitors' fast and slick passing and their ability to use both flanks.

They opened up the Old Alts' back four at will, while any rare home side raids were always going to be dealt with easily by Unsworth's water-tight defence.

Something had to crack as the visitors squandered a number of good scoring chances, so it was a surprise on 20 minutes when a lightning run down the left by Mike Hunter enabled him to beat a number of defenders before squaring the ball for Paul Thomson to open up the afternoon's scoring from close range.

If Old Alts were clinging to the hope of keeping within touching distance of their visitors, then this was quickly dashed when some excellent work down the right-hand side let Sol Whitby score from an almost impossible tight angle, past Day in the home goal.

Further chances went unpunished to put them in a stronger position by half-time, but if the truth were known, Unsworth were not going to allow a comeback from the Sale side.

A quick goal was needed after the break to end any thoughts of revival and after only minutes, Thomson ran into the box only to be brought down by centre-half Lewis.

Thomson got back on his feet to despatch the perfect spot kick past Day.

More constant pressure and some good football played on the slippery ground was a credit to the Unsworth side and they got their reward when Phil Smith was brought down in the penalty area by 'keeper Day.

This time, Thomson looked favourite to take it, but he was overruled by captain Steve Truelove. The result was the same as Truelove put his penalty in exactly the same place as Thomson had earlier.

Unsworth now turned the game into a virtual practice match, but there were still more goals to come and the fifth was courtesy of a combination of the two substitutes, Kevin Gallagher and Dave Healy.

Gallagher's low, angled shot came back off a post for Healy to drive the ball back into the net from close range for a rare goal.

A Rushton shot drifted just wide and was followed by Paul Lyons' long-range strike, which crashed against the bar.

Just to make Unsworth's win even more convincing, a sixth and final goal came when Thomson raced onto another through ball to round the 'keeper and place his shot into the open net. That gives Thomson eight goals in five games.

UNSWORTH: Hassall, Morley, Brimelow, (Rushton), Truelove, Harrington, (Gallagher), Whitby, C. Lyons, Thomson, Smith, P. Lyons, Hunter, (Healy). Substitutes: Welch, Crampton.

On Saturday, the first of two back-to-back derby fixtures takes place with local rivals Warth Fold at the Hillock (kick-off 2.30pm).

The following weekend the team meet at the Elms.

Local pride will be at stake for both sides and for Unsworth it will be a further chance to progress up the table.

Last Saturday's win pushed them up to fifth place in the table -- their highest position of the season so far.

Manager Nick Woods welcomes back Simon Hannan to the squad, with Ian Harrington, Dale Brimelow and Chris Lyons all expected to shake off knocks picked up over the last two games.

Woods will be aware that Warth Fold are a good footballing side and results have suggested that they are capable of obtaining some good wins against higher opposition. No-one will be taking anything for granted.

Not much football for the clubs other sides due to bad weather, but last Saturday morning the under-11s were in action at the Hillock and stormed to a 6-0 win as they beat Marauders' Hawks with goals from Ryan Knight, Johna Rose, Jack Kirkham, Sean Ferguson and Joe Urskin sealinged a good morning's work.

The under-15s kept their season going with a 4-1 win at Eastbury. This puts them back on top of the table on goal difference. Unsworth were a little under par, but still had too much for the home side. The goals came from Nathan Kennedy, Brendan Cranshaw, Luke Smith and Danny Jones with David Molly taking the Man of the Match award.
