DRINKERS have backed a pub's efforts to make St Patrick's Day a bank holiday.
Gill Thorogood, manager of O'Neill's in Silver Street, Bury, started a petition to make March 17 a bank holiday, and presented it to Bury Town Hall.
She said: "St Patrick's Day falls on a Monday this year and many customers have been complaining that they will be stuck in work all day when they should be out celebrating in style. We hope this petition will show the powers that be why March 17, 2004, should be given the recognition, and the party, it deserves."
This year, staff at O'Neill's will be raising money for the Royal National Institute for the Blind with a range of events, including an auction for a hat signed by a mystery celebrity. Celebrations run from Friday to Monday, (March 17).
