THE chairman of Prestwich area board, Councillor Paul Nesbit, has hit out at "bullies" who attended the recent special meeting to discuss the future of the Sainsbury site.
Coun Nesbit, who chaired the public meeting at the Longfield Suite, said a number of people resorted to intimidating, bullying tactics to silence people who did not agree with their point of view.
As reported earlier, more than 300 people attended the meeting to have their say on the controversial application to transform the former supermarket into a retail and residential complex.
The majority of people who spoke at the meeting objected to the proposals, claiming it was too high and would cause major traffic problems.
Only a handful of people actually spoke in favour of the development and were heckled and booed by the audience.
Coun Nesbit said: "I found the people who objected to the proposals were quite bullying in their manner. That meant the people who supported the scheme did not speak up. I find it a shame that they had to resort to intimidating tactics."
