ST Gabriel's RC High School has announced a bid to become a centre of excellence.

The Bridge Road school in Bury wants to achieve specialist science college status but in order to do so it will have to raise £50,000.

Deputy headteacher Adam Loster explained: "If our bid is successful and we raise the money it means the DfES will give us £600,000 over a four year period."

He said the school had chosen to focus on science because it is a very strong department and has been selected as a lead department by Bury Council and the head of department, Helen Mather, as a lead teacher.

This means the teaching of the subject has been deemed as an example of good practice from which other schools in the borough can learn.

Mr Loster said: "It is an exciting new venture and hopefully it will mean improved results."

He said specialist status would benefit the whole community because it would mean the school could provide after-school or "twilight" lessons for adults.

"We have six months to raise the money and are seeking financial assistance from local business and industry, individuals and parents," he said.

If you can offer financial help for the bid you should contact Adam Loster at the school on 764 3186.
