HOUSEHOLDERS in Bury are being urged to be on their guard when answering their door to strangers.
The warning from United Utilities comes after bogus water officials tried to trick their way into elderly customers' homes across the borough.
Fortunately, the two elderly residents in Whitefield followed the company's advice and checked if they were genuine workmen, leaving the conmen to flee empty-handed.
However, in the latest incident, a 68-year-old Radcliffe man was tricked into letting an alleged water board worker into his Melrose Garden house. Once inside the thief searched several rooms before escaping with a quantity of cash. The thief struck at 5.30pm on Thursday (March 13) and is said to be a white male, 6ft tall, slim wearing a grey colour sweater and trousers. Whitefield CID is investigating the incident.
Noela Kelly, United Utilities' customer services manager, said: "All too often we learn of elderly people being tricked by a thief posing as a water official. We are keen to do everything possible to raise awareness of this type of crime.
"If in doubt, call United Utilities on 0845 746 2200, and check the caller's identity while they wait outside."
United Utilities also has a password scheme which is available for anyone who feels they would like extra protection in their home. Customers can register their chosen password with United Utilities by calling 0845 746 1100 or textphone 0808 143 1195.
