A GREAT-GRANDMOTHER who was awarded the MBE for devoting her life to others has died aged 97.
Mrs Elizabeth Green, of St Mary's Court, in Prestwich passed away earlier this month and her funeral was held at St Mary's Church last Thursday (March 13).
The active pensioner made front page news in 2001 after she was included in the New Year Honours List for devoting 75 years service to young people at the Adelphi Lads Club and the Ragged School for Girls in Salford.
Mrs Green became involved in the club as a teenager when she met her late husband, Samuel, and went on to run the canteen and tuck shop.
Both were valued volunteers at the club, in Cannon Street, and when Samuel died more than 30 years ago a room was named after him.
When Mrs Green gave up working there at the age of 93, her name was also added to the memorial plaque.
Modest about her MBE, Mrs Green continued to wonder why she had been chosen for the honour but she went on to enjoy a lovely day at Buckingham Palace while collecting her award.
Two weeks before Mrs Green's death, she went to stay in Oak Lodge nursing home in Prestwich after suffering a bout of shingles and suffering a fall.
She was a very popular lady and will be remembered by many for her dedication to young people.
Her daughter-in-law, Anita Green, said: "She had a wonderful life."
Mrs Green leaves a son, Peter, four grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her eldest son, Graham, died three years ago.
