COVENTRY City chief Gary McAllister today insisted Matt Jansen will be given the chance to shine with the Sky Blues between now and the end of the season.

Jansen is currently on loan at Highfield Road as he continues his comeback from a career-threatening head injury.

But the 25-year-old striker has been conspicuous by his absence from the City team-sheet in recent weeks after being laid low by a stomach bug.

He started off his loan period with back-to-back appearances against Bradford City and Sheffield Wednesday.

But, after missing a couple of fixtures through illness, he's subsequently spent the last couple of games on the bench, where he's been an unused substitute.

However, a mini injury crisis at the First Division club meant the Ewood goal-ace was set to return against Leicester today.

And McAllister hopes his loan star can now seize the opportunity and finish the season with a flourish.

"I'm in contact with Graeme Souness and he is concerned about Matt but everyone wants the best for him because he is such a great guy," said McAllister.

"He has come through a very difficult period and, as much as I would have liked him to come here and make an immediate impact, he is still carrying the dregs of the problems he had in the summer.

"But there is no doubt he is a talented player and everyone just wants the best for him.

"He is in the reckoning for today's game and as far as I'm aware he will be staying with us until the end of the season so we hope he can make his mark."

As things stand, Jansen is set to stay with City until the end of the season and Rovers hope he can get a raft of first team games under his belt between now and then so he'll be fit and ready for a return to the Premiership.
