A HIGH school pupil who is living under the threat of deportation has won the backing of his local MP to stay in Bury to finish his education.
As reported in Friday's Bury Times, 16-year-old Jack Jankowiak is being held in a London detention centre with his father Andrew and mother Elizabeth awaiting forced removal to Poland.
But this week, Mr David Chaytor MP for Bury North, said: "I am aware of the family's case and am particularly concerned about the son and sympathise with the situation he is facing in completing his education. I am looking to make representation to allow him to have an extension on his stay to allow him to sit his GCSEs."
The Jankowiak family fled to Bury as asylum seekers two years ago. They had started a new life living in Goldfinch Drive. Mr Jankowiak set up a painting and decorating business and Jack was attending Broad Oak High School.
A huge campaign, led by Jack's best friend Christian Bridge (15) and fellow schoolpal Grant Chadwick, has been started to grant the family permanent residency in the UK.
Broad Oak head teacher Mr Andrew McKenzie raised Jack's situation with Mr Chaytor when his visited the school last Friday.
Mr McKenzie said that from speaking no English, Jack is on course to get A to C grades in his exams.
Mr Chaytor said: "I am hugely sympathetic to Jack's situation and Mr McKenzie's support strengthens the case for Jack."
However, speaking from the holding centre near Heathrow Airport, Jack told the BT: "We don't know what is happening. I want to come back and sit my exams."
