FED-up residents in Rochdale Road are on the warpath over the state of their pavements.

Householders whose homes are on the slip road to Waterfold Park say the pavement is riddled with holes due to the laying of pipes and cables to serve businesses on the Park development.

They are also angry that drivers suffering breakdowns on the nearby motorway are leaving their abandoned cars outside their homes and not collecting them.

Mr Joseph Foster, who lives in Rochdale Road, said: "Our homes are facing the back of the Village Hotel and we're very near the motorway. Over quite some time, the street has been dug up to lay cables and water pipes for the hotel. But now, the footpath is full of holes. We've got onto the council about having the footpath improved. But the local authority have told me the work isn't warranted. But the footpath here is really bad."

He is also angry that this part of Rochdale Road is used as a dumping ground for abandoned and broken down cars.

"One vehicle has been here since November and another car has been outside my own house for six weeks," he said.

Mr Foster added: "Nobody seems to do anything about it and we never see the police down here. We pay council tax and our road is access-only. Yet you park up in Bury for ten minutes or so beyond the time allocated and you get fined £60.

"But down here, we have to put up with cars which have been here for weeks. It means that a number of the residents can't park. The road isn't wide enough for two vehicles."

A spokesman for Bury Council said gas company Transco was involved in mains work on that section of Rochdale Road and would be responsible for ensuring any footpaths are properly repaired. Local authority inspectors would monitor the work.
