THE owner of a family-run sports shop, which is moving after more than a century, today revealed some sporting treasures of the past as he cleared out the stock room.
Ken Cocker, of Cockers, in Keirby Walk, Burnley, has unearthed some memories of days gone by -- including Tom Finney's football boots.
Mr Cocker, who runs the store with his wife Kathryn and children Cheryl and Craig, took over from dad Fred and uncle Albert Cocker, who ran the store set up by Herbert Dransfield in 1890.
It was first opened as a cloggers, to serve the town's miners and millworkers, but changed direction in the 1950s.
The shop soon became an Aladdin's cave of sports equipment.
They stock every conceivable type of ball, as well as darts, boxing gloves, punchbags, headguards, snooker cues, goggles, running spikes and karate suits.
The pairs of Tom Finney football boots, now more suited to a bricklayer more than a footballer, were left forgotten until this week.
Ken, the great-great-grandson of the original owner, said: "My first job after I left school was in the shop on Saturday mornings nailing leather studs into boots.
"We used to do hundreds of pairs of shoes every week and my dad Fred and uncle Albert worked until 10pm or 11pm."
The store is now moving around the corner, to be closer to the town centre.
Ken added: "It's been a difficult decision after my 38 years here, but I think we all need to try something new and we are looking forward to it."
Ken's mother Annie Horner, 80, said: "I think it is time we had a move."
The latest addition to the Cocker dynasty, is Cheryl's four-month-old son, Harry Tomlinson, who the family hope will keep the business going.
