REGARDING the controversy that has raged over the redevelopment of Church Street in Blackburn, and I have accepted the predominant view of your many correspondents, that the council has made some serious and costly mistakes in the planning of it.
My concern was heightened last week, for as I was approaching Lloyds Bank, a large HGV came down from King Street and swung out to within three metres of the derelict building at the top of Church Street in an effort to line up with the underground entrance to the shopping centre.
While I was speaking to one of the angry pedestrians, two more vans came through the same way and went into the underground distribution area.
My conclusion was that you walk in this area at our peril. There are no signs or indications to warn of commercial traffic entering what you would think is a pedestrianised place.
The council has compounded its mistakes by not closing the HGV entrance to the shopping centre when there is an alternative entrance to this area next to the head Post Office in Ainsworth Street.
