THEY came, some armed with walking sticks, others wrapped safely in their parents' arms, to conquer the annual Holcombe Challenge.

More than 100 people, ranging from the very young to the very old, gathered in Holcombe Village on Sunday to climb the hill and officially launch Bury Hospice's Red Rose Week.

Organiser, veteran runner Marie Caldwell, said: "It was a tremendous sight from the elderly with their walking sticks from a father carrying his baby on his front. There were plenty of families and children supporting the event. Those who took part were generations apart and there were a few pet dogs, too."

Although money is still to come in, Marie is confident that at least £1,000 has been raised for the hospice in Dumers Lane. Radcliffe. Since 1994, the challenge has raised £8,000 for the cause.

"This event is now in its ninth year and around 110 turned up to support the challenge, the first fundraising feat of this year Red Rose Week.

"There were about only 23 who took part back when it first started. The challenge is not a race, it is a fun, sponsored trek up the hill," said Marie, "The Mayor and Mayoress of Bury also turned up in the full regalia, complete with hiking boots."

Competitors were treated to a well deserved drink and sandwiches at the Hare and Hounds Pub following the hill climb. Everyone who took part received a certificate.

"It really was an enjoyable day out. Thanks goes to everyone who took part and my family who helped me organise it all. Next year, I want to come up with something special to mark the challenge's tenth anniversary," added Marie.
