A £1.5 MILLION grant for Morecambe could bring the creation of a new conservation area and a revamp of historic buildings in the resort.

Lancaster City Council has won the cash from the Heritage Lottery fund - and now plans to launch a 'Morecambe Townscape Heritage' initiative.

It will aim to support the restoration of key historic buildings - such the Midland Hotel - and regenerate the Poulton and town centre areas.

Part of the Morecambe Resort Action Plan, it will also see a new conservation area designated.

Extra controls over demolition and building standards will be imposed in the area, and grant aid will be targeted at proposals that boost its character.

John Donnellon, the city's corporate director for regeneration, says: "It presents a great opportunity to build on Morecambe's heritage as it seeks to regenerate the town."
