BURY Boys gained sweet revenge for their cup defeat by Wigan, with a convincing 4-1 victory to maintain their 100 per cent league record.

Following the later news that Trafford had only drawn, they became MEN League champions with a game to go.

The title is thoroughly deserved by the boys, who have shown great teamwork throughout the season and played in a manner which does great credit to their schools.

The game was only four minutes old when leading striker, Lee Bruce (Derby HS) slotted home from close range. From that point, Bury were on top and it came as no surprise when Bruce was on hand to head in off the cross-bar in the 32nd minute.

Centre backs Danny Anderson (Bury Church) and Peter Hickford (Tottington) stood as firm as ever against a pacey Wigan attack.

The second half started as the first half when, after only three minutes, Bruce completed his fourth hat-trick of the season -- a tremendous achievement.

Things got worse for Wigan when the ball broke loose to Mark Priestley (Tottington) some 25 yards out and he produced a lethal drive into the top corner of the net.

To their credit, Wigan kept fighting and were rewarded when a speculative shot deceived the Bury 'keeper at the near post.

But Bury still maintained their control and the Wigan 'keeper made an outstanding save to deny Bruce another goal.

Every player contributed to a fine performance, with left back Sam Jones (Woodhey) putting on a great display.

The final league game against Manchester is at Derby School on Monday, April 28, kick-off 4.45pm. The trophy and medals will be presented at this game. Manchester need a point to finish runners-up.
