SIXTEEN cars were towed away from Clitheroe town centre in a clampdown on tax-dodgers.

Insp Bob Ford, of Clitheroe Police, said: "It has been a successful initiative and 16 vehicles without road tax were either clamped or towed away to the police compound.

"The owners will have to pay to retrieve the vehicles and if they fail to do so the vehicles will be crushed.

"This initiative has gone down well with law-abiding citizens and there will certainly be repeat visits to the town by the DVLA clamping team over the coming months."

Cars targeted included those where the tax had just out of date, as well as those displaying no tax at all.
