FIREFIGHTERS tackled a major blaze which broke out on moorland above Burnley.

More than 20 fire crew from Burnley and Padiham were involved in fighting the fire on land off the Long Causeway, near the wind turbines at Coal Clough.

The fire broke out at just after 11pm yesterday although it is not yet known whether the blaze was started by accident or deliberately.

The blaze is the latest in a series of grass and moorland fires in the Burnley area.

Fire chiefs have reported a significant increase in the number of incidents with crews receiving up to six calls a night.

Last month more than 70,000 trees in a Burnley Forest plantation were destroyed after a moorland blaze broke out on land at Gorple Road at Worsthorne and Hurstwood Reservoir.

The latest blaze required four fire engines, two from Burnley and two from Padiham, and Lancashire Fire and Rescue's Incident Support Unit, based at the new fire station in Hyndburn.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "We recieved the call notifying us of a major grass fire at 11.23pm on Monday.

"Twenty-five firefighters have been involved in helping fight the fire which we had to leave overnight for safety reasons. Fire crews returned to fight the blaze at about 6am today."
