A BINGO hall worker who stole more than £2,000 from his employer has been ordered to pay back the full amount.
Blackburn magistrates heard that Ian Kelly walked out of work with £2,285 -- nearly all in £1 coins.
And the court was told that he spent his 'jackpot' on drink, drugs and hotels in Blackpool and Manchester.
Kelly, 33, of Townley Avenue, Accrington, pleaded guilty to stealing £2,285 from Gala Bingo.
As well as being ordered to pay full compensation, he was made subject to a community rehabilitation order for 12 months.
The court heard that Kelly was seen by staff and on CCTV withdrawing cash for his station.
Basharat Ditta, defending, said the offence had been so stupid it was almost comical.
"You have heard that the money was nearly all in £1 coins and his manager was standing just yards away from him when he took possession of it," said Mr Ditta.
"He simply drew the money and walked out and he wasn't seen again until it had all gone."
He said Kelly had turned to drugs, especially cocaine, following the break-up of a relationship.
"He was working as a barman and that could not support his habit," said Mr Ditta. "He began to build up debts and, after starting work at Gala Bingo, committed this theft in desperation."
Mr Ditta said that after spending the money Kelly had arranged to go to the police station to give himself up.
