THE theme of flight is the focus of a new project which has started in the heart of Bacup.
Development work is taking place in Market Street after five bird sculptures landed in the town.
The sculptures are part of the Market Street Gateways project in partnership with Bacup Consortium and Groundwork Rossendale.
The project is being funded by Lancashire County Council and the Single Regeneration Budget to make Bacup's entrance impressive and unique.
Claire Sims, Groundwork Rossendale project manager, said: "Work has started by local metal artists Ammira. We hope to have it completed as soon as possible."
The sculptures are to be the main focal point but improvements have also been made to the railings and steps leading up to Plantation Street.
The concept and designs for the sculptures and railings were developed through a series of Community Art Workshops.
The theme of flight is supposed to show the uplifting and an optimistic symbol of the revitalisation in Bacup.
