THE impression that Lancashire Road Safety Group is being efficient and fair minded by offering speeding drivers a speed awareness course (LET, April 3) instead of endorsement points is bogus.

After 30 years' clean driving I have collected (within the space of 48 hours) six points and a £120 fine for speeding at 37mph and 42mph. Yet there is no course option for me!

The reason? To have the course you must have been speeding at 35mph -- not 34mph of 36mph, but 35mph. How do they work that one out?

There is no evidence their campaign is saving lives. But what it is doing is totally alienating otherwise law-abiding citizens and turning them into criminals. A £120 fine is a big fine, more than I'd have got if I'd been caught with drugs -- a real offence.

I've written to the Chief Constable and told him, after turning me into a criminal he can no longer expect my help or support when the police are in difficulty. I have gone to the aid of the police before (a police woman attacked by a drunk), but I won't do that again.

That is the true result of this ill-thought-out campaign designed to raise money for the police and give them an easy job instead of tackling real crime. The true outcome is public alienation and the police will end up being the real losers.
