BLACKBURN Rovers winger Keith Gillespie could be a shock transfer target for Rangers this summer.

Gers boss Alex McLeish is thought to be lining up a move for the Northern Ireland international, according to sources north of the border.

The Glasgow giants are said to have made formal contact with Gillespie's agent about a move to Ibrox at the end of the season when his contract expires at Ewood.

McLeish is in the market for a winger after recently being linked with a move for Espanyol's Roger Garcia.

But the Ibrox chief is now thought to have switched his attentions to Gillespie after his scouts have watched the 28-year-old in action on a number of occasions this season.

Gillespie is resigned to the fact that his future lies away from Ewood after Rovers have dragged their feet over offering him a new deal.

And a move to Ibrox would appeal to the player as Gillespie grew up as a Rangers fan.

His agent, Phil Munnelly, today refused to be drawn on speculation regarding his client's future other than to confirm that Rovers have yet to make him a new contract offer.

"I've got no comment to make regarding stories about Rangers," said Munnelly.

"All I can say is we haven't heard anything as yet (from Blackburn) and that's as far as I can go on this one."

Gillespie recently admitted he's now on the look-out for a new club after a new deal from Rovers has failed to materialise.

"It's now a case of looking elsewhere," he said.

"The club have been very poor about this. They've given me no indication at all about my future.

"It's not that I want to leave but it looks like I have only got a few games left for them."

Rovers' reserves are in action against Birmingham City tonight at St Andrew's (kick-off 7pm).
