DICKENS'S Great Expectations is brought to the Library Theatre with a dark menace, shrieking sound and scorching lighting effects.
The classic tale of Pip's progress from snivelling boy to moneyed gentleman is given a 21st century twist by the Unicorn theatre group.
Aimed at younger people there is plenty of action and activity on stage set around an ingenious metal screen that acts as a doorway to times past and present.
We are shown around a Victorian world of strange characters, including the broken-hearted Miss Haversham, the intimidating Mr Jaggers and Magwitch the convict.
Pip's journey is a long and difficult experience that is sped along with ingenious movement and music that sees him yearn for the love of Estella.
But as he climbs the rungs of London society, bankrolled by a mystery benefactor, he begins to question the life he is leading and what happened to his friends and family in the past.
And once he discovers the origins of his wealth, the answers he finds set up an altogether different ending to the play than the one you were expecting.
