THERE was only one way the all-conquering Blackburn Development side could finish the season -- with a crash, bang and an almighty wallop!

For the newly-crowned league champions saved their best until last with a record breaking 104-0 win against Aldwinians and reached the magical mark of 1000 points for the season.

The Development side, a mixture of last season's under 16s and former first team players, ran in 16 tries to make it a staggering total of 168 for the season.

The team has averaged four tries and 35 points a game with fly half Luke Elston reaching the personal goal of 200 points. Dominic Moon was leading try scoring with 22 -- 14 of them coming in the last four matches!

No wonder coach Andrew Whalley and his assistant John Bullen are delighted.

Whalley said: "I've been with the club since 1987 and I have never seen any of our sides score 1000 points for the season. It really is the ultimate aim for any team and I am really proud of them.

"The thing is our third team did it as well!"

He added: "The expectation was to finish in the top five but to win it in such an emphatic way shows the high level of commitment to training and pre-match preparation all the team have shown all season.

"But this only paints part of the picture as all players contributed to the style and quality of the overall performances throughout the season."

The team, formed at the beginning of the season to act as a feeder to the first team, won 24 of their 29 league games to win the North West Counties Third XV League.

Whalley hopes three or four of his players will be drafted in to the first team next season. And he is not upset the team may be dismantled.

"I would be upset if none of our players got called up. That was the whole purpose of setting up the Development team. All ready, Moon, Sutcliffe, Archer and Coe have had a taste of the required standards with substitute appearances for the Firsts ."
