ALTHOUGH at the time, the toppling of Saddam's statue in Baghdad did seem the right thing to do to mark the end of the tyrant's reign, on reflection, I feel it would have been better to have left it intact for posterity.
Instead of destroying the surrounding art work, it could have been engraved with all his many crimes against his people together with a huge inscription: "The Thief of Baghdad."
After all, he did plunder the nation's wealth for his own glorification. Like all caesars, emperors and dictators, before him, he wrongly believed the people were there to serve him.
