THE part-owner of a drained reservoir in Darwen has reassured frog-lovers that none was killed when he pumped out the water.

Dozens of residents around the Almond Street site contacted council officers and members to express concerns for the wildlife when they saw the reservoir being drained into the street.

But Francis Robinson, who has owned the site with a partner since earlier this year, said the drainage was intended to make the site safer and no wildlife was damaged.

Mr Robinson said: "The reservoir was originally built to house water to put out any fires at the Crown mill and obviously it doesn't have that use any more.

"We consulted the Environment Agency and RSPCA about our plans and they removed some of the wildlife. The water was also treated before to make it safe to drain.

"Our aim has been to make the site secure because children sometimes climb over the walls.

"Future plans have not yet been decided, but it is possible we will apply for permission to develop the site for housing."
