WHILE much of what our council does is to be applauded, somebody seems to have forgotten that more than 50,000 compost bins have been distributed throughout Lancashire.

The cost of all these bins, the logistics, administration and even free delivery from the Midlands has had to be paid for (by someone)!

Now, we are being provided with brown wheelie bins which would make our compost bins defunct. Those running the brown wheelie-bin scheme don't appear to know the make-up of compost -- potato peelings and all forms of uncooked fruit and vegetables, tea bags, grass and soft hedge cuttings, plus balls of paper to allow air circulation -- and that, without this mixture of 'green' and 'brown," composting is now worth doing. So our brown wheelie bin may as well not be delivered.

As for the paper bag collection scheme, which has been running for some time, obviously the response varies, but from approximately 60 properties in our vicinity, only three families take part in this scheme.

What, may I ask, is going to make all the rest of the people turn 'green,' especially as we already pay for our rubbish to be collected without the extra cost?
