A REFORMED heroin addict armed himself with knives for self-defence because he was being threatened, a court was told.

Burnley magistrates heard how Lee Fisher, 26, was suffering from depression, paranoia and panic attacks.

Police found two weapons hidden n bushes when they were called to reports of two knifemen in Barnoldswick.

Fisher, of East Hill Street, Barnoldswick, admitted possessing a bladed article and threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour. He was bailed to await sentence.

Andy Robinson, prosecuting, said police were called to reports of two men with knives and went to speak to the defendant.

About 20 children were in the area and when an officer approached Fisher he was abusive.

Fisher was told to sit down, refused, swore again and was backed against a wall. The officer was concerned Fisher may be armed and he was taken to the ground and arrested.

Mr Robinson said two knives were found in nearby bushes. When Fisher was interviewed, he was intoxicated and also taking medication. He said he carried the two knives for self-defence.

Trevor Grice, defending, said when police arrived Fisher was playing football. He claimed the police were very aggressive and he had reacted badly. At the time he did not think he had done anything wrong.
