A WOMAN was abducted and taken on a 90mph police chase which ended with the car crashing into roadworks.
The 20-year-old, of Bank Street, Darwen, was unharmed but is said to be extremely shaken by the incident, which began at the town's Sainsbury's car park just before 9am yesterday.
She got into a silver Toyota Celica after being approached by a man who she knew, police said.
A friend she was with was left behind and alerted the woman's family.
They managed to contact the man on a mobile phone three hours later and he told them he was in Manchester.
After several conversations, he agreed to return the woman to East Lancashire.
About 12.30pm, police patrol cars spotted the Celica on the A666 near the M65 at junction four in Darwen.
Police said the officers followed at a safe distance, but the Celica failed to stop and left the M65 at junction five in Guide.
The Celica then passed through built-up areas at speeds of up to 90mph before crashing into roadworks in West End, Oswaldtwistle.
He added: "I have spoken to the victim and she is extremely shaken up by the whole incident.
"Anybody being subjected to that ordeal of being taken against their will and subjected to dangerous and erratic driving doesn't bear thinking about.
"It was a frightening situation for her to be in." He appealed for anyone who saw the incident outside Sainsbury's or the Celica driving around to contact the police on 01254 353569 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.
