ATHERTON'S Lianne Birkett, has received the annual Jim Hammond Prize for her performance in her A-Levels gaining four A's and one B.

Lianne was a student of Bolton School where she gained her A-Levels and is now studying Law at University College, London.

The award is aimed to commend the top performing students in the area as two other Wigan A-Level students received the award for their achievements.

The award is in memory of former Wigan miner Jim Hammond who rose to become a leading member of the National Union of Mineworkers in 1946. The prize offers more than just the award as it helps out the students to follow their dreams of University as it helps with the financial cost of books.
