Hull KR 17 Leigh Centurions 28 by Mike Hulme: THE famous old name of Holdstock came back to haunt Hull KR as the new National League One season kicked off .
But it was not Roy Holdstock, the blond-haired front rower of the great Rovers pack of the 80s that was on everyone's lips - but the 2003 version, Leigh's Dale Holdstock.
Son of Roy, Holdstock junior stepped in as emergency winger for the Centurions and came up with two crucial tries as Leigh began the new campaign with a morale-boosting victory at Craven Park.
It was an outstanding team effort by injury-hit Leigh, especially in the second half as they fought back from 17-10 down to win with some style.
John Duffy's early penalty was quickly erased by Alaisdair McClarron in the space of six minutes for an 8-2 lead before Pat Weisner's defence-splitting pass gave Alan Hadcroft the chance to pull four points back before a Stephenson penalty edged Rovers into a 10-6 lead.
The first of Holdstock's double, a dummy and dive over at the flag, levelled matters at 10-10 until Latham Tawhai popped over a late field goal to give Rovers an 11-10 half time lead.
When McClarron scored his hat-trick try from inside his own half and Stephenson tagged on the conversion, Leigh were in trouble. But showing great character they pulled themselves together when David Alstead stretched over and Duffy's conversion cut Rovers' lead to a point.
Leigh controlled the final 20 minutes and eased to victory with tries from Phil Kendrick and Holdstock .
There was no way back for Rovers and Duffy cemented two priceless points with two late field goals.
