BLACKBURN Rovers are weighing up a move for promising young keeper David Yelldell.
The 21-year-old stopper, who currently plays for Stuttgart Strikers in Germany, was back in England this week for another four-day trial with Rovers.
And goalkeeper coach Roy Tunks said he made enough of an impression to persuade the club to take a closer look.
"David spent four days with us and he did well in training," said Tunks.
"We now need to see how he performs in a match situation and we may well send someone out to Germany to watch how he performs in his own environment.
"But he's one of a number of young lads we are looking at with a view to next season."
Rovers are currently on the look-out for a young understudy to Brad Friedel and Alan Kelly after Alan Miller was forced to retire through injury.
And Yelldell would appear to be in pole position, although the club are also keen on Notts County youngster Saul Deeney.
Initially, Yelldell spent four days training at Brockhall last month but he did well enough to be invited back for a second time.
And he may well prove to be a cheaper option than Deeney should Rovers decide to follow up their interest.
Meanwhile, Rovers boss Graeme Souness has hinted that he pass up the chance to keep Henning Berg for another season, even though the player has indicated he could be talked out of retiring.
Berg had previously announced his plans to return to Norway in the summer but then in an exclusive interview with the Evening Telegraph last week he revealed he was having second thoughts.
However, Souness has already targeted a replacement for the former Manchester United star and it looks as though there will be no u-turns.
"The situation is, we have long been under the assumption that Henning was finishing and had made moves in other directions as a consequence," said the Rovers boss.
"We are down the road with someone else and although Henning says his circumstances have changed, we have explained our situation to him."
In the meantime, Souness will switch his attention to Monday's Bank Holiday clash with Bolton Wanderers.
And, although the Rovers boss is fiercely determined to beat Wanderers, he admits he doesn't want to see Sam Allardyce's side relegated at the end of the season.
"From my point of view, I think the more teams in this area who are in the Premiership, the greater the interest all round. I really do hope Bolton stay up," said Souness.
"It's also another derby game for the both of us, which creates interest for both clubs and that's maybe the biggest reason of all.
"But Sam is a pal of mine, too. We have played against each other and known each other for a long time.
"He has done a wonderful job there and deserves to stay up for all the hard work he has put in.
"I've seen Bolton a couple of times this season and watched them on the television as well.
"They had a slow start but are finishing strongly now and playing good attractive football.
"Today is their cup final and I really think Bolton will beat West Ham at the Reebok.
"One thing's for sure, I'm hoping they'll be safe by Monday."
