AN investigation is under way after fire burned out an empty house in Arthur Street, Brierfield.
It was reported at 8.30pm on Saturday, is said to have been started deliberately.
A joint investigation by Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and the police has been launched.
Nelson sub-officer Mark Woodward, said: "The fire was suspicious. It looked as though someone had broken into an empty house and set fire to paper behind the door.
"When we arrived, there was a severe fire in the doorway and up the stairs."
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were sent in to bring the blaze under control. Nearby houses in Arthur Street and Castle Street were also checked for fire after smoke was seen coming from their roofs.
Mr Woodward added: "We thought the fire could have spread, but it was just smoke travelling through the roof spaces."
No-one was injured.
