TOP TV zoologist David Bellamy has praised the Friends of Sunnyhurst Wood for their hard work over the past three years.
The professor, who visited the wood in 2000 and identified 96 species of animals and plants, was quick to congratulate the Friends on hearing they had raised more than £20,000 since their formation three years ago.
He said: "I identified 96 species and that was just a quick look. The conservation of local woodlands like Sunnyhurst Wood is of great importance and can only be accomplished with help, vision and the total commitment of local people. The Friends have done very well. I hope they continue to do such a good job."
The 85-acre wood has been significantly improved since local residents came together in order to attract more money to the ancient woodland.
The area has attracted grant funding from various bodies, including the Sure Start Centre on Lord Street.
